The East Riding Heritage Way - Overview

The 'Way' is made up of 4 linking walks of about 20 miles each. These are the 'Beverley Twenty', the 'Hutton Hike', the 'Rudston Roam' and the 'Headland Walk'. These connect Hessle (Humber Bridge) , Beverley (Minster), Driffield (Riverhead), Bridlington (Priory or Harbour) and Filey (Cobble Landing)

The footpaths and bridleways all have standard signposts and yellow or blue arrows respectively. Orange stickers plus B20 marking are used on the Beverley Twenty from the Humber Bridge up to the entry to Beverley Westwood, though these are liable to be removed by vandalism etc.. There are some county council B20 signposts along part of the northern section.

Much of the Headland Walk from Sewerby to Speeton is signposted 'Headland Way'. Scarborough Council is attempting to complete the cliff top path from Speeton to Filey but parts are difficult as yet. Check tide times!

The Hutton Hike and Rudston Roam have no special marking, particularly as they are mainly used by experienced walkers.

Route descriptions should be correct, but changes do occur, with diversions and new building taking place. Temporary diversions for work to take place, such as electricity grid maintenance and pipe line laying, or for safety reasons such as due to erosion etc., may occur . Maps should be placed by the council to show diversions where they occur.

At present, duplicated route descriptions are sent free of charge and it may be possible to E mail them by request. The small profit made from badge sales goes to cover any cost with any surplus going towards group funds.

Additional Notes:

• Please report any path problems to Robin Lundie, Countryside Access Manager, East Riding of Yorkshire County Council, County Hall, Beverley HU 17 9BA. Also mention this in your report. North of Buckden, Scarborough Council is responsible.
• Details of other 'any time' walks can be obtained from me. The latter includes the Scarborough Rock , the East Thriding Treble Ten, and the Humber Bridge Link walks.
• Accommodation lists should be available from tourist information centres.
• Public Transport is provided between Hull, Beverley, Driffield , Bridlington and Filey by Arriva trains and East Yorkshire motor services buses. • Useful hostelries along the route include the Half Moon at Skidby, the White Horse at Cranswick, and the Bluebell at Burton Agnes. There are plenty in each of the towns and there are a selection of cafes open during the summer months round Flamborough Head.

Problems 2002:

• Summer overgrowth can be a problem particularly on some parts of the Hutton Hike and the Rudston Roam. Spring and early summer give the easiest walking.
• A new footbridge has been promised for many years for the River Hull (West Beck). The County Council are now reluctant to provide this. If it is still missing, use the diversion and let the council know of your concern!
• The Nature Reserve at Top Hill Low is being steadily developed. It is open daily during the summer and on winter weekends. Try not to disturb wildlife or twitchers along this section of the Hutton Hike!
