Down Long Lane to roundabout, then R on Wilsden Rd. for about 600yds. R on Goit Stock Lane (just before bridge) and with Harden Beck on your L continue passing to left of caravan site. Ahead on FP (signed Waterfalls and Leech Lane), pass to R of bungalow but continue ahead with beck now on your R. Take care by the waterfall (use the handrail) and when you reach track at Hallas Bridge turn L. After 10yds, up steps on R and approach old mill. Immediately before the mill take signed FP to L. At the top of the second flight of steps turn R downhill before taking waymarked FP slightly uphill on your L. After the first field, the path keeps close to the wall/fence on L until, with road in view, it drops down and bears L to the B6144 above Hewenden Bridge.
Cross the road, turn R and take first signed FP on your L. Over the stile, bear left up the banking. Keeping the stream below you on your left cross three walls at convenient gaps or stiles. After 3rd wall bear ½ R to gate and then ahead to stile and Station Rd.
Cross road, L for 10yds then through stile. Keeping wall on R go SW before exiting 4th field onto track by Wood Nook. Bear L to read (Whalley Lane), cross and ahead on signed FP to track at Hollin Park. Turn R and follow track past row of cottages on your L. At the last cottage go R over bridge. Take path ahead climbing the hill and continue to L of telegraph poles. Over stile up between fences to lane. Cross to CP 1 (GR 075342).
R down lane, across the reservoir embankment and take the path R to the far end of the reservoir. Cross the footbridge and turn immediately L up the valley. The path follows, initially on the R and later on the L, Denholme Beck, and after passing some cottages joins the A644 at GR 073326. L and then R up Cragg Lane to A629. Cross and L for 59yds then R up Foreside Lane (by Denholme Velvets) for approx 600yds. Immediately after passing a group of 3 trees, take L fork (a walled track). When the double walling finishes make for the gate 100yds ahead. When through the gate take the R path (aim to the L of the distant windmills). At finger post, ahead, down steps, over bridge and up the steps on the other side. Cross stile and follow well defined path across Ovenden Moor. After crossing FB you soon reach track. R up track to road by Withens Inn, R on road to CP2 at Windfarm car park (GR 043309).
From CP, R up road for 300yds before taking stile on L. Follow waymarks and after passing building turn R and head for the distant Stoodley Pike (if visible). If it is not, the bearing is 230°. Some posts and cairns mark the path. As it drops it bears R to the gatehouse. Cross stile, L on lane for 20yds and then R down footpath by house. Path bears slightly R to a stile 20yds to R of gate. Cross stile and head for telegraph pole. Follow way marker to R. through gap in wall and zig zag down to lane. Bear R on road over bridge, pass gatehouse and take FP on L (signed "Keelham Gate"). The path climbs steeply with fence/wall on your R. When the fence/wall turns R you are at the top. Turn R (fence on R) and follow into dip. Cross Back Clough and continue in same direction (350°) on the narrow bridleway. Eventually a faint bridleway marker confirms you are on the correct route. When you reach the Conduit another marker sends the bridleway L. After 80yds the Conduit ends and the path turns R (330°). After 250yds you reach another bridleway marker sending you L. DO NOT follow this but continue up hill in the same direction for 120yds to standing stone. 200yds on a 320° bearing will bring you to the Trig Point. From Trig Point take path N for 140yds when path bears half left to a bridleway marker (ignore direction signs). Continue on roughly 300°, passing smalls cairns and keeping in the plateau until the A6033 becomes visible in the distance. Shortly afterwards path bears L and drops sharply to meet the A6033. Cross the read to CP3 (GR 999311).
Down road for 50yds, take stile on R. Down the moor, through small gate and down the side of next field to Old Road, R for 200yds then take signed bridleway on L. This drops sharply to, and crosses, Lumb Bridge. Continue on bridleway (signed Shackleton Knoll). This walled lane climbs to a ruin (Sunny Bank) and bears L to a track. Turn R on track for 100yds before taking bridleway on L just before the next ruin. Through gate at top of walled lane to open moor. Follow the wall on your L until directed through small gate by bridleway sign and then follow wall now on your R (big field). At end follow clear track towards the hamlet at Walshaw. At lane bear R but after 30yds take track on R. Ignore track on R to Horodiddle and shortly as track bears L, take signed FP on R and then gate on R.
Track goes uphill (to R of wood). At the top of the walled lane take signed FP ahead. This shortly rejoins the track. Continue ahead on track uphill (ignore track on R), over the top of the moor and down to the shooting hut. L (signed FP to Walshaw Dean) for 300yds and where main track turns sharply L you are at CP4 (GR 970334).
Take minor track (350°), pass through gate and continue alongside middle Walshaw Dean Reservoir, cross bridge (ignore FP on L), go through gap in wall and after 50yds take signed FP (Pennine Way) on your R. Continue almost to the top of the hill (GR 980348) and where the flagstones are two abreast for 5 stones take the path R alongside the drainage channel which doubles as the borough boundary. After 100yds you pass a boundary stone (KC 1902) and after another 400yds a succession of FP markers confirm the route.
Follow the boundary ditch for about 1500yds. Soon after passing, on your L, the remains of a pit, you will notice, again on your L, a slightly raised section. Leave the drainage channel some 25yds later (there is a small pile of stones). Initially the bearing is 340° but the path soon turns R. After 200yds the path crosses the gully and after another 70yds it leaves this gully but quickly joins a second gully, the left side of which it follows for about 100yds. It then crosses the gully and takes a 40° bearing (aim for the large stone on Harbour Hill opposite), and descends to join a path coming in from Top Withens (signpost).
Turn R on footpath and when you reach the wall, keep it on your R. Beyond Harbour Lodge, turn R at signpost, cross the footbridge and continue to next sign post. At this sign post turn L on wide track for about 600yds. When you reach a post (remains of a vandalised sign post) on your L, take path opposite on your R (bearing 85°). At the wall turn L for ½ mile to Moor Side Lane. Cross to CP (GR 018362).
Turn L down road and after 100yds take lane on L (Upper Marsh Lane). After passing houses on R take FP on R (signed Marsh). Path goes through small gate to R of Upper Marsh Farm then follows the stream to a road. Turn L for 200yds before taking track to R of Marsh Chapel, which is on your R. Follow the track, which bears L, through two small gates to Moorhouse Lane. Turn R down road and take signed FP on L opposite Moor House.
Follow the paved path until you reach Bents House on your R. Take the FP to R immediately beyond Bents House. Keeping the wall on your R, the path drops down to and crosses the railway (CARE!) and continues to Bridgehouse beck. DO NOT CROSS the beck but go L, through the remains of a Kissing gate and ahead on track. This soon becomes a path again and crosses the beck via a metal bridge. Go L but at the wall DO NOT CROSS but take the stile on R and head up to A6033. Turn L for 150yds before taking signed bridleway on R. Follow BW markings to Black Moor Road. Cross the road and continue ahead BW (signed Senior Way). Ignore two L turns after 50 and 150yds. At the end of Cuckoo Park Lane the BW goes through a gate onto open moorland, swinging R eventually to pass to the R of the quarry. 150yds after going through the broken down wall, ignore new FP on L and continue on BW to road (Trough Lane). Turn L along the road to CP6 at Heath Cottage Nurseries (GR 064354).
R to A629. Bear R and (for safety's sake) keep on R of A629 until opposite FP sign (Hewenden 2.0km). Cross the road with great care and go through the small gate. Ahead over stile and take path to L of green hut. Cross the beck via the lower bridge and bear R through Buck Park Wood (path high above steam). Over stile at end of wood. The path meanders through some gorse bushes before crossing two walls and veering L to a stile. Cross the stile and continue with wall on R to East Manywells Farm. Through farm buildings and down farm lane to B6144. Bear R for 60yds then cross road and down signed FP opposite. Immediately before Hallas Cote Farm go through small gate to L. Keep the wall on your R and cross two other stiles. Then continue with hedge/wall on your R to the far corner of the field. Over stile into lane by Hallas Hall Farm.
Turn R down lane, taking the waymarked path on your L after 60yds. Keep the wall on your L and follow the path round to the L. Enter the wood via the waymarked stile. Pass through wood on well defined path.
Leave the wood over stile and continue ahead on path down the middle of the field. Cross the beck using the metal bridge and up hill, wall on R, over waymarked stile at top of field contouring R to gap in wall.
Path continues to R of the chimney, over the stile and ahead passing to R of Goit Stock Cottages, follow their drive L and uphill to B6429. Turn R for ½ mile of mainly down hill walking back to the finish at the Golden Fleece Inn (remember the 30mph speed limit!).
